The Zamfara State House of Assembly has suspended two local government council chairmen over alleged financial misappropriation.
The affected officials are Mannir Mu’azu Haidara of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area and Umar A. Faru of Bukkuyum LGA.
In a statement, the House spokesperson, Bello Kurya, described the action as a firm move to promote transparency and accountability in local government administration across the state.
He explained that the decision followed a plenary session where the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs presented its findings through the Deputy Speaker, Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who also serves as the committee’s vice chairman.
According to Kurya, the committee recommended the suspension of the two chairmen due to their failure to honour multiple invitations to appear before it and explain how funds allocated to their councils were spent.
After deliberations led by Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki, the Assembly unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations and approved the immediate suspension of both officials pending the outcome of the investigation.
The suspended chairmen have been directed to hand over their duties to their respective vice chairmen without delay.
Kurya stated that the Assembly viewed their actions as disrespect to the legislature, along with a lack of transparency and accountability.
He added that the House reviewed a report on the financial activities of the 14 local government councils for the 2025 fiscal year and adopted all its recommendations.
The resolutions have been forwarded to the state executive for implementation, as part of efforts to ensure good governance and fiscal discipline.
Attempts to reach the suspended chairmen for comment were unsuccessful, as they could not be contacted.
